iBanesto encourages Jiménez to lower expectations
Unsure of the possibilities of a new contract for 2003, José Maria Jiménez nonetheless stated that it would iBanesto or nothing should he continue in the pro ranks. It appears a place could still be available for Jiménez, who has suffered from severe depression, provided he keep his own expectations in check concerning his program and goals for the season.
iBanesto manager Eusebio Unzúe reportedly spoke with the rider last week, discussing the options for this season. "He's obsessed with returning to win the Tour and the Vuelta, because he can't conceive of training four hours a day without these goals, but we hope he can see things another way: as therapy," Unzúe said to Spanish daily Marca.
The team wants to offer 'Chava' a program that would, as Unzúe put it, "avoid placing overly demanding expectations on him, to be sure that it would not cause a relapse." Unzúe maintains that the door is open to Jiménez, so longer as he understands the conditions surrounding the offer and does not carry unrealistic expectations about his own comeback.
Jiménez ready to return, iBanesto not sure
After personal troubles derailed his 2002 season, José Maria Jiménez appears ready to rejoin the peloton in 2003, although his position within the iBanesto.com team remains uncertain. Jiménez recently met with team manager José Miguel Echavarri to discuss the situation, prepared to seek last minute negotiations with other teams if necessary. Although Jiménez is confident of a return to top form, team director Eusebio Unzué remains a bit more cautious, telling Spanish Eurosport that "first it is important for him to recover, then we will speak more."

One of Spain's storied teams is looking at one year from disappearing. Banesto (now iBanesto.com) is one of Spain's cycling institutions, winning six Tours, two Giros and one Vuelta, but the Spanish bank is pulling out of its sponsorship at the end of the 2003 season. Team manager Jose Miguel Echavarri and sport director Eusebio Unzue are facing the possibility of not being in the peloton unless they can secure a new sponsor.
"I don't want to look at it so tragically," Echavarri told the Spanish daily AS. "We have a year to secure a sponsor to survive. It won't be easy. Cycling is living through a moment of crisis and we don't have a magic wand. But we bring experience of more than 20 years and a winning philosophy."
Now facing just one year of guaranteed sponsorship, the pair are finding it hard to sign top riders for the 2003 season. The team lost out on signing Oscar Freire because Rabobank came offering a two-year deal instead of what Banesto could only offer one. The same thing just happened with recent Vuelta winner Aitor Gonzalez, who also wants a two-year deal.
The team is also looking at only racing next year with 20 riders. Many whose contracts are up this year have not been re-signed for next year, including Jose Maria Jimenez, Santi Blanco and the Pole Baranowski. Leonardo Piepoli also might be leaving.
